From his obituary:

SPC James Roland Jr., age 21, gave his life in defense of his country on November 16, 2011 when the Stryker vehicle he was riding in was struck by an IED in the Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. James, a 2009 graduate of Clearwater High School in Clearwater, KS, joined the Army Reserves between his junior and senior year of high school and went to full active duty shortly after graduation. He was deployed in April with the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment from Fort Wainwright, AK and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, AK. He performed his duties according to the “Soldiers Creed” and freely accepted the risks involved with his job because…”Someone has to defend this country and that is what I want to do”… James was an avid hunter of deer and rabbits. He loved his three dogs Sundae, Angel and Cocoa and taking them on rabbit runs around the neighborhood. He loved video games and playing pranks on his numerous friends and siblings. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
