Private 1st Class Matthew Joseph England, 22, from Gainesville, Mo., died June 8 when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in An Najaf province, Iraq.

England entered active-duty service in September 2009 as an armor crewman. He was assigned to 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment since January 2010.

England deployed in support of Operation New Dawn in August 2010.

His awards and decorations include an Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge and Driver and Mechanic Badge.

In PFC England’s honor, national and state flags will be lowered statewide for one full day on Monday June 20, 2011 and will be flown at half staff in Ozark County from June 21, 2011 – June 26, 2011.
