Daniel Lohmann is back home! He along with his mom, Betty, and girl friend, Carrie, came to visit Janice, Connie, and me at the 920 Wildwood building on December 30, 2010.

Daniel will be here until the middle of January, then he will be returning to his duty station in Hawaii. For those who don’t know him, Dan is a remarkable young man who looked after his buddies and organized a massive pen pal letter writing group while stationed in Afghanistan.

I’ve also got home coming news for a couple other soldiers too. Joyce Muenks told me that Seth Muenks was scheduled to leave for home near December 23rd and Trisha Garrison said that Shalamar Brewington “is home for good, just reserves at this time.”

CJ wrote me via Facebook:

Mr. Lauer,
How are you? Things are good here. Very busy.
I should have taken the time to write you sooner. I have received many boxes from you over the last couple of months. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Everything has been great! The Christmas Tree was AWESOME! I really appreciate what you and your group do for the troops.
Your nephew, Wally Klein, is awesome! I have also received several boxes from him and his family. Thank you so much for getting us in touch with each other. He is truly an amazing person at such a young age.
Thanks again for all that you do.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Below is an email I received from Capt. Damien Butel on Saturday, December 18, 2010.

I hope all is well with you going into this holiday season. I have
received the Christmas Tree and a little extra Christmas Cheer. Thank
you very much! Please pass along my gratitude to all those who
contributed. I heard the story of your son. It is wonderful to hear
that he is well after that accident and kudos to him on his musical

So far, our tree has been the best I have see on base. Surprisingly,
there have been several pop up, even a few real ones, but our tree
continues to get compliments over all the others – and we can put it
right back in the box and pass it along to those who replace us. Along
with the CDs, we are doing quite well with getting in the Christmas
spirit despite being on the other side of the world. If only we had a
little bourbon for the Eggnog. Ha!

Again, thank you for all of the support, it truly does mean a lot to all
of us. I meant to get a Christmas Card out, but that just hasn’t
happened – so I resort to the quick convenience of email.

Merry Christmas and may you have a safe Christmas. We are certainly
trying to do the same.

Damien Butel

Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan

Also on Saturday, I learned that my niece, Maylene Klein and her friend Keri Montgomery sent  more packages to a couple of our soldiers last Friday (12/17/10).   Maylene, who’s son Wally collected candy for C.J. Mather after Halloween  ( ), sent CJ two packages for Christmas. Keri Montgomery collected goodies and had her girl scouts make cards for packages that went to both CJ and Damien.

On Monday, December 13, 2010 I received two bits of good news.

The first is from Pam Bax letting me know that Joshua Gass has received his tree.

Joshua Gass

Talked to my mother-in-law over the weekend and she said that Josh had gotten his tree and was so excited!!! Thank you for making his holiday away from home better!

The second is from Donna Schuessler letting me know that Julie Hollowell is coming home!

Julie Hollowell

She wanted me to thank everyone for the packages she’s received. She said each box was so full of goodies that there was enough to share with the other folks in her area! She said it’s nice to know that people care.

Also, I learned through Kathy Sale, that Paul Sale has received his
Christmas tree:

From: Sale, Kathy
Sent: Monday, November 29, 2010 8:15 AM
To: Lauer, George
Subject: FW: Troop Support: Christmas Decorations Packed!

George, Paul called yesterday. He got his Christmas tree on Saturday. Thanks, Kathy

Kathy has also informed me that Paul has received and greatly appreciates his Halloween and Thanksgiving Shipments.

I learned between the Thanksgiving and Christmas shipments that Kevin Eng was coming home:

From: “Adrian, Diana”
Date: November 15, 2010 7:34:09 AM CST
To: “George Lauer”
Subject: RE: Christmas / Chanukah / New Year Troop Shipment

We believe at this time that Kevin will be returning home prior to Christmas, so he will not need a package. Thank you so much for all that you have done for him and so many others.

We also heard from Kevin himself:

To: George Lauer
Date: Mon, 22 Nov 2010 09:07:20 +0430
Subject: Thank you (UNCLASSIFIED)

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: FOUO

I would like thank you for your support and the care packages that have
been sent to me. The care packages were shared with guys from my unit. I
am getting ready to rotate back to the states and just wanted to let you
know so that you can stop sending me packages.

Again, thank you for your support

SPC Kevin Eng
Classification: UNCLASSIFIED

Finally, I also learned that SPC Seth Muenks will be coming home soon too, but we determined that we would be able to send him Christmas packages and a tree.
