National Military Appreciation Month

This month is half over, and I have scarcely heard any mention that May is National Military Appreciation Month.  US Senate Legislation to designate May this way began in 1999 and in April of 2004 both Houses of Congress unanimously approved this designation with H. Con. Res. 328.

However, there’s still time to show you care:

Fly your flag at home.  It might help to remind others that we are a Nation still at war and that we have our precious children in harms way protecting us.

Shake hands and tell the men / women in uniform you really appreciate their sacrifices.  Find the Veterans in your community and do the same.

Become involved with and help the families of our deployed troops – send care packages etc.

Of course you can and should do these things year round.  The month of May however affords us two very special days to do them:

1>      Saturday, May 16, 2009 will be the 59th observation of Armed Forces Day.
2>      Monday, May 25, 2009 will be the 141st observation of Memorial Day Formerly known as Decoration Day.

Finally, there is one more date in May I want to mention – Tuesday May 26, 2009.  On that date I will start collecting for the Independence Day Troop Shipment.  Collection will end June 18th as I am targeting a shipping date of June 20th.   I will post more details on donation locations and items needed later; you can always donate on line at http://georgelauer.com/.
